A brillant, surreal post-apocalyptic sciene fantasy anime by director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and artist Yoshitaka Amano. The film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025 for its 40th anniversary. In a desolate and mysterious world, a young girl devoutly guards an egg of unknown origin. On her journey, she encounters a boy carrying a cross, who begins to question the nature of his faith and his mission.

Miss Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and Iruru‘s peaceful lives are shattered when Kanna’s father, Kamun Kamui, leader of the Chaos Forces, arrives and forces her to return to the Dragon World to fix a past mistake. With a war brewing between Chaos and Harmony, Kanna must find a way to unite the two worlds but is torn between her loyalty to her friends and her father‘s demands. Miss Kobayashi, however, refuses to let her go and tries to mend Kanna and Kamui’s broken bond. As dragons clash, Iruru uncovers a hidden force manipulating the war. Can they stop the war before it consumes both worlds?

Tatsuya Ishihara directed the film at animation studio Kyoto Animation. Yuka Yamada provides the script, and Miku Kadowaki provides the character designs and serves as chief animation director. The movie originally released on June 27, 2025 in Japan.

About the anime series: Miss Kobayashi is your average office worker who lives a boring life, alone in her small apartment–until she saves the life of a female dragon in distress. The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into an adorable human girl (albeit with horns and a long tail!), who will do anything to pay off her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not. With a very persistent and amorous dragon as a roommate, nothing comes easy, and Miss Kobayashi’s normal life is about to go off the deep end!
